A recent recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, includes the 2019 Subaru Outback, Ascent, Impreza, and Legacy, for a total of 188,207 vehicles. The vehicles were recalled due to a faulty fuel pump that could develop cracks and deform. This can cause a vehicle’s engine to suddenly stall, therefore making it more likely that the vehicle will be involved in an accident.
According to Subaru, these faulty pumps will be replaced with a new fuel pump with a higher density. Subaru will be notifying owners of the affected vehicles via mail in early June.
In the United States, car accidents are responsible for thousands of fatalities and many of them are caused by unsafe motor vehicles. To prevent these accidents, the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards sets clear standards regarding the minimum performance requirements of various vehicle parts. Generally these standards cover seatbelts, helmets, steering columns, and other safety equipment, as well as brakes, tires and other essential equipment.
If a vehicle fails to meet these standards, the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires vehicle manufacturers to issue a recall. Once drivers have been notified of the recall, the manufacturer can choose to repair the defective part, replace the vehicle with a similar or identical vehicle, or refund the full purchase price (minus depreciation). If you suffered injuries due to a vehicular defect, you may be entitled to damages from the manufacturer. A products liability attorney can help you file a claim to recover compensation.
